Bare Trees Beside a Reedy Nursery Pond

A drawing in grey, black and cream shows a still pond in the foreground, its dark surface ruled with fine horizontal strokes and dotted with a few pale lily pads. Behind it a bank of dry reeds and low shrubs runs across the frame, and the grasses are drawn in short, bristling lines. Four slender leafless trees rise from the middle ground. Beyond them a flat, open plot of ground leads to a fence and rows of plain buildings under a pale, washed sky. A few small dark birds cross the upper part of the picture. The light is soft and the mood is quiet, as in early spring, before the trees have leafed out.

The facts date the work to March–May 1882 and place it on Schenkweg. It is made with chalk, graphite, pen, brush and ink, with white body color added for highlights. Bare branches and last year's reeds are typical of the end of winter in a temperate landscape, and ponds and ditches like this edge many market gardens and nurseries. The wide landscape format and the muted, low-contrast palette suit a widescreen or ultrawide monitor, where the fine linework stays clear and icons are easy to read against the calm tones.
