Three Grizzlies Watching From Spring Meadow

Three brown bears stand in a green meadow, all looking toward the camera. The largest one rears up on its hind legs in the center, forepaws hanging in front of a pale chest, and its dark coat catches the light along the shoulders. A smaller bear with a lighter, tawny coat stands upright on the right beside a bush with fresh yellow-green leaves. A third bear on the left stays on all fours with its head turned toward the viewer. Behind them is a tangle of bare, grey-brown shrubs, and low sun lights the new grass.

Grizzly bears (Ursus arctos horribilis) are a North American subspecies of brown bear. They often stand on their hind legs to see farther or catch a scent, which is curiosity and not aggression. A larger adult with smaller bears of different sizes often points to a female with young, which stay with their mother for two years or more. In spring, grizzlies feed heavily on new grass, sedges and roots after months in the den. The wide frame and the central upright figure suit a landscape desktop monitor, where the bears sit comfortably above any icons.
