Lion's Mane Jellyfish Drifting in Dark Fjord Water

A single jellyfish hangs in deep blue-green water, its rounded bell glowing a warm amber-orange at the centre and fading to pale, translucent cream at the scalloped edge. Below it, a dense mass of fine, pale tentacles trails downward, while a few thin strands stretch out sideways and diagonally across the dark background. The light is soft and diffuse, and the contrast between the warm bell and the cool water gives the scene a calm, quiet mood. The animal sits slightly left of centre, with plenty of empty dark space around it.
The lion's mane jellyfish, Cyanea capillata, is one of the largest jellyfish species in the world, though this specimen is only about 10–12 cm across, with tentacles roughly 60–80 cm long. It was photographed from a jetty in Gullmarn fjord at Sämstad, Lysekil Municipality, Sweden. Its tentacles carry stinging cells used to catch small fish and plankton, and they can still sting if touched. The dark, even background leaves room for desktop icons, so this image suits widescreen monitors and dark-mode setups especially well.
