Cherry Buds Breaking Open Against Clear Blue

A single grey-brown branch crosses the frame from lower left to upper right, studded with small clusters of buds. Most are closed and rounded, with green scales tinged with reddish-brown. A few at the top have begun to loosen, and their paler green tips are showing. The background is an even, cloudless blue with no gradient or distraction. That keeps attention on the rough bark, the glossy bud scales and the small dark scars where earlier growth fell away. The light is bright and direct, and the mood is quiet and early-season.

The buds were photographed on a cherry tree (Prunus sect. Cerasus) at Gåseberg in Lysekil Municipality, Sweden. Cherry trees form their flower buds in the previous summer and carry them through winter in a dormant state. Warming spring temperatures then trigger the scales to open and the blossom to emerge. The timing varies with the weather, so the same branch can look very different from one week to the next. The wide landscape format and large empty blue space suit a desktop monitor, since icons can sit on the open sky without covering the branch. It also works on an ultrawide screen.
