Cherry Blossoms Along a Stone-Walled River

A row of cherry trees in full pale pink bloom runs along the far bank of a shallow river, set on a dark stone embankment. The water is calm and grey, with small green patches of vegetation and gravel bars at the edge. Behind the trees a forested mountain rises under a wide sky of thin, rippled white cloud broken by patches of blue. A few rooftops and a bridge sit low on the horizon. The river is the Takano, in Kyoto, and the mountain is Mt Hiei, which rises on the city's northeastern edge. Cherry trees along Kawabata Street flower here in early spring, usually for only about a week or two before the petals fall. Flowering depends on temperature, so the peak moves from year to year. The wide landscape frame and the long diagonal of the riverbank suit a widescreen desktop monitor, where the sky can hold icons without covering the blossoms. It also works on an ultrawide display.
