Fluffy Fledgling Blue Jay Perched on Thin Branch

A young bird sits on a slim, curving branch, its body turned in profile and its head looking to the right. The plumage is soft and downy in gray, with a dark cap of feathers on the crown and a pale ring around the dark eye. The folded wing is the one strong colour note: deep blue with neat white bars and spots. Blue jays (Cyanocitta cristata) are common across eastern and central North America. Young birds leave the nest before they are fully feathered, and for a few days they stay close to cover while the parents bring food. The fluffy gray body and short crest seen here are typical of that stage, and the adult's bright blue and black pattern comes in later. Jays eat acorns, insects and seeds, and they are known for their varied calls.
