Red Cardinal Tail Beside Fanned Blue Wings
2048 × 2039 px Desktop Added 2 downloads
A red bird seen from behind fills the lower right of the frame. Its long tail is spread and angled toward the camera, and its back is a warm red-brown. Beside it, a second bird shows fanned blue feathers barred in black and tipped in white, with a gray underside and dark legs. The two overlap and the scene looks mid-motion, with a slight blur in the feathers. Behind them are a rough gray stone surface, a boulder in shadow and bright green leaves in dappled daylight.
The red bird fits the Northern Cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis), recorded in Woburn, Massachusetts. Cardinals stay in eastern North America year-round and often feed on the ground, taking seeds and fallen fruit. Males are bright red, while females are warm tan with red in the wings and tail. The blue, white-tipped feathering looks like that of a jay, a bird that often feeds in the same places and can push other birds aside. The square format and the strong red-against-blue contrast suit a tablet or phone, where the subject can sit in the center behind app icons.
