Red Cardinal Perched on Sunlit Reed Stem

A male cardinal sits on a pale, diagonal stem, turned slightly to the side with its crest raised. Its red plumage is the brightest thing in the frame. The orange-red bill and the black mask around the eye and bill stand out against it, and the long dark tail slopes down to the lower left. Behind the bird, green blades and reeds fall into a soft, dark blur. A few golden, out-of-focus strands cross the upper right corner. The light is warm and falls mainly on the bird, so the mood is calm and quiet.

The Northern Cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) is a non-migratory songbird. Males are red and females are mostly warm buff with red accents, and both sexes sing. Cardinals favour thickets, reed beds, woodland edges and gardens, where they eat seeds, fruit and insects. This image was recorded at Mulégé in Baja California Sur, Mexico, on 27 March 2024. The bird sits off-centre on the left and the right side is open, so desktop icons have room there. It suits landscape monitors and ultrawide displays, and it also works on a laptop screen.
