Granite Ridge Above a Sayan Mountain Lake

A narrow, pale ridge of broken rock climbs to a jagged tip on the left, its flanks patched with green moss and low grass. Beyond it, a wide valley opens toward a dark lake on the right, which reflects the sky and the slopes along its edge. Farther back, a grey rocky summit stands against bright clouds. Sunlight moves across the hillsides and leaves some areas in soft shade. In the foreground, a flat slab of grey stone, a few scattered boulders and clumps of shrubs frame the view. The mood is quiet and open, with cool greens, greys and a patch of blue sky.

The scene is in the Ergaki range of the Western Sayan Mountains in Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia. The photographer's caption describes the Buiba Valley as a landscape of metamorphic schists and granites shaped by ancient glaciation. Glaciers carve broad valleys and hollows that later fill with water, and they leave behind the scattered boulders and smoothed rock surfaces seen here. Above the tree line, the vegetation is mountain tundra: low, hardy plants that grow among the stones. The wide landscape format suits a desktop monitor or an ultrawide display, where the lake and distant peaks have room to spread.
