Saguaros Beside a Weathered Stone Ranch House

A very wide panorama crosses open desert scrub under a pale blue sky with scattered white clouds. Two tall saguaro cacti stand in the foreground, their arms raised, while a low stone building with a flat roof sits in the middle distance beside a sandy clearing. Thin wooden posts rise from the ground, and a cluster of taller, slender cacti stands behind the house. The ground is dry and gravelly in muted browns and tans, dotted with small shrubs and a few greener trees. The light is bright and even, and the mood is quiet and sun-baked.

The site is Dos Lomitas Ranch, also known as Blankenship Well, in Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. According to the park, the Gray family owned it, and the main house dates to the 1920s, when a family of nine lived there. Saguaros grow slowly and can live for well over a century, and they are a defining plant of the Sonoran Desert. A ranch this far out depended on a well for its water. At 3840×511 pixels, the image suits an ultrawide monitor or a dual-screen spread, where the full sweep of the horizon can run across the desktop.
