Greater Roadrunner Mid-Stride Over Dry Golden Grass

2048 × 1366 px Desktop Added 1 downloads

A roadrunner is caught in full sprint along a low ridge, its body stretched out nearly parallel to the ground. The long tail trails behind, one leg is extended forward and the other kicks back. Its plumage is streaked and spotted in dark brown, black and cream, with a hint of green sheen on the wing. A short crest sits above a heavy, pointed bill. Below it, a bank of dry, straw-coloured grass fills the foreground in soft texture, and a thin band of gray gravel runs behind the bird. Above everything is a flat, clear pale-blue sky with plenty of empty space. The light is bright and even, and the mood is quick and wiry.

The greater roadrunner (Geococcyx californianus) is a ground-dwelling member of the cuckoo family, found across the southwestern United States and into Mexico. It can fly, but usually prefers to run, and it hunts lizards, insects, small snakes and rodents on foot. The tail works as a rudder during fast turns. This frame was recorded in Yolo County, California, in late August 2024. The wide landscape format and open sky suit desktop monitors and ultrawide screens, where icons can sit comfortably in the empty blue.
